Course Description

YOG2202 – Pranayama, a fundamental practice in yoga, focuses on breath control and manipulation to enhance the flow of prana (life force) in the body. By regulating the breath, pranayama aims to harmonize the body and mind, promote physical and mental well-being, and facilitate spiritual growth. In this course, participants will delve into 14 diverse Pranayama techniques, ranging from simple to complex, each offering unique benefits and applications. Key practices such as Anulom Vilom, Sheetkari, Meru Danda, and Ujjayi significantly benefit the respiratory, cardiovascular, nervous, and immune systems, as well as overall vitality. However, it's essential to note that not all Pranayama techniques are universally applicable; some have specific contraindications. A lesser-known advantage of Pranayama is its role as a gateway to meditation. Through breath control and awareness, it fosters mental tranquility, improved focus, and readiness for deeper meditative states. Additionally, the course covers face yoga, commonly associated with beauty enhancement, but also offering numerous health benefits. Participants will learn to use authentic oils and products for skin and hair nourishment, activate vital energy through marma points on the face, perform exercises to strengthen facial muscles, and apply breathing techniques to augment these practices for a comprehensive experience. The curriculum also introduces contemporary methods such as Gua Sha stone, cupping, the Ayurvedic Kansa wand, and facial masks, providing a holistic approach to health and beauty.

Pranayama is a term derived from the Sanskrit words "prana," meaning life force or vital energy, and "ayama," meaning expansion or control. So, Pranayama essentially means expansion of life forces. It’s believed that 1 minute of Pranayama practice can add an extra second to your life where no modern pill has been proven to achieve. Develop confidence into the scientific mastery of pranayama practice thus giving you the benefits slowly & assuredly.
Face yoga, as the name suggests, is a practice that focuses on exercises and techniques to tone and rejuvenate the muscles of the face. Most face yoga practitioners today focus only on the external or beauty aspects of face yoga while ignoring the internal or healing aspects of it. During this time faculty will share theoretical knowledge via posts, handouts and writing boards. There will be Q & A at the end for half an hour. All students are encouraged to keep the questions in the last half hour to encourage discussions and debates.

Students are expected to eat dinner at least 2-3 hours prior to the class if from EST. For pacific time zone, students are expected to join prior to the dinner time at 6 pm pacific. The class is essentially a free format which allows students or teachers to extend the time of the sessions, if need be, based on the content being discussed. The students are also encouraged to do self-study via the podcasts and books shared by the teacher much ahead of time which can be additional tools to ensure long term daily practices (sadhana). It’s also advisable to wear something comfortable like yoga pants and T-shirts for the sessions to allow easier movements while in sessions. For women it’s also advisable to be free of facial ornaments to avoid them interrupting in the face yoga sessions. Also, entire program is designed for both men and women including face yoga sessions. Students will take a MCQ (multiple choice question) quiz once in 2 weeks and they are allowed to retake the quiz if errors occur. During the course, students will be required to submit 1 or 2 short essays. They need not be academic quality papers but should be based on students’ self-reflection on what they have learned and assimilated so far. Selected essays may qualify for being published on the university’s website. Also, students are encouraged to email the teacher via the google group or forum at any time during or after the program if questions arise and she believes in establishing a personal relationship with every student for better understanding of the subject.
