Course Description

SAN7105 - Ayurveda Basic introduces the foundational concepts of Ayurveda, its history, and the classical Samhitās. Students will explore key terminologies like Āyu and essential principles such as Loka-Puruṣa Sāmya Siddhānta, Trisutram, and Sāmānya-Viśeṣa Siddhānta. The course delves into core Ayurvedic frameworks, including the Tri-Dosha and Sapta Dhātu concepts, offering insights into their roles in health and disease. Learners will classify rogas (diseases) based on causative factors, prognosis, and diagnostic principles. Emphasis is placed on developing holistic wellness plans using Ayurvedic treatment components and applying these principles to personal health management through the Trayopasthambha. This course provides a strong foundation for understanding and integrating Ayurveda into modern health practices.

Course Learning Objectives

By the end of this course students will be able to:

  1. Explain the history of Āyurveda, recognize the available Samhitās, and define basic terminologies like ‘Āyuḥ’, along with their foundational principles such as Loka-Puruṣa Sāmya Siddhānta, Trisūtram, Sāmānya-Viśeṣa Siddhānta, and more.
  2. Describe Āyurvedic key concepts like Tridoṣa, Saptadhātu, and more.
  3. Classify Rogas based on entities such as their causes, prognosis, Doṣa involvement, presentation, and diagnostic principles.
  4. Build holistic wellness plans for health based on the components of Āyurvedic treatment.
  5. Managing personal life with Āyurveda using the Trayopasthambha.

Module 1: Introduction to Āyurveda

  • History and evolution of Āyurveda
  • Overview of classical Samhitās and their significance
  • Basic terminologies: Āyu, Cikitsā, Svasthya

    • Loka–Puruṣa Sāmya Siddhānta (Macrocosm–Microcosm theory)
    • Trisūtra (Three foundational principles of treatment)
    • Sāmānya–Viśeṣa Siddhānta (Principle of similarity and dissimilarity)

Module 2: Ayurvedic Key Concepts

  • Tridoṣa theory: Vāta, Pitta, Kapha – characteristics and functions
  • Sapta Dhātu (Seven bodily tissues) and their roles in health
  • Concepts of Agni (digestive fire) and Ojas (vital essence)
  • Basic understanding of Mala (waste products)

Module 3: Classification and Diagnosis of Rogas

  • Classification of diseases based on:
    • Nidāna (causes)
    • Sādhya–Asādhya (prognosis)
    • Doṣa involvement
    • Lakṣaṇa (symptoms and presentation)
  • Diagnostic principles:
    • Daśavidha Parīkṣā (tenfold examination)
    • Aṣṭavidha Parīkṣā (eightfold examination)

Module 4: Ayurvedic Treatment and Wellness Planning

  • Components of Āyurvedic Cikitsā (treatment):
    • Components of Āyurvedic Cikitsā (treatment):
    • Śamana (palliative therapies)
    • Nidāna Parivarjana (removal of causative factors)
    • Rasāyana (rejuvenation) and Vājīkaraṇa (aphrodisiac therapies)
  • Creating holistic wellness plans based on Āyurvedic principles
  • Personal health management using Trayopasthambha (three pillars of health):
    • Āhāra (diet), Nidrā (sleep), and Brahmacarya (regulated lifestyle)

Module 5: Practical Integration of Āyurveda

  • Case studies for understanding disease diagnosis and treatment
  • Designing wellness plans for different Prakṛti (body constitutions)
  • Applying Āyurvedic principles to everyday life for enhanced well-being

Class Structure

Each MAS course comprises 45 hours of teaching and with 2 quizzes and 2 assignments. The number of assignments and quizzes change subject to faculty discretion. Final exams for all courses conducted at the end of the semester.
