Course Description

Sahitya II – Padya, delves into the intricate structure of Śabda (words) and Artha(meanings) in classical Sanskrit literature. Students will explore the Vācyārtha(literal) and Vyaṅgyārtha (implied) meanings in poetry, developing skills to interpret and hypothesize the deeper messages of poets. The course includes summarizing and analyzing ślokas from various saṃskṛtakāvyam, enhancing comprehension of poetic texts. A clear distinction between Kāyva-saṃskṛta (poetic language) and Sambhāśana-saṃskṛta (transactional language) will be drawn, highlighting their unique characteristics. Students will also create vyañjana vṛtti (suggestive meaning) and elucidate it through the principles of Kāvyaśāstra, deepening their understanding of Sanskrit poetics. This course fosters critical thinking and interpretative skills essential for appreciating the richness of Sanskrit literature.

In this course students will be able to:

  • Explain the structure of śabda and artha.

Each MAS course comprises 45 hours of teaching and with 2 quizzes and 2 assignments. The number of assignments and quizzes change subject to faculty discretion. Final exams for all courses conducted at the end of the semester.
