Course Description

Sahitya IV – Gadya and Champu course offers an advanced study of Sanskrit poetics through the lens of Rasagaṅgādhara. Students will explore the Kāvyalakṣaṇa (poetic attributes) as defined by this seminal text, examining its application to various prose forms (gadyāni). The course distinguishes between gadya kāvya (prose), padya kāvya (poetry), and campū kāvya (a blend of prose and poetry), fostering a comprehensive understanding of their unique characteristics. Students will critique selected portions from texts based on gadya kāvya and campū kāvya, honing their analytical skills. Additionally, the course includes reconstructing sāhitya śāstra in the style of nyāya śāstra, providing a deeper appreciation of the theoretical frameworks underpinning Sanskrit literature. This course equips students with critical and creative abilities essential for engaging with classical Sanskrit poetics.
