In this course, students will be able to:
This course is structured to provide a comprehensive understanding of the Atharvaveda, progressing from foundational knowledge to critical analysis.
1: Introduction and Foundational Structure
Introduction to the Atharvaveda: Historical context, significance, and unique characteristics.
Key divisions and classifications: Śākhās, Kāṇḍas, Anuvākas, Sūktas, and Mantras.
Identifying major themes and subject areas within the Atharvaveda.
2: Rituals and Practices (Atharvaveda-karma)
Interpretation of Atharvaveda rituals: Healing, protection, abhicāra, and other karmas.
Significance of rituals in Vedic life: Social, religious, and practical applications.
Analysis of specific ritualistic hymns and their symbolic meanings.
Discussion of the Atharvaveda’s role in addressing both mundane and spiritual concerns.
3: Structural and Thematic Analysis
Detailed analysis of structural variations within the Atharvaveda’s sub-sections.
Comparative analysis of different Kāṇḍas and Sūktas.
Identification of thematic differences and inconsistencies.
Exploration of the language and style of the Atharvaveda.
4: Explaining Variations and Interpretations
Discussion of possible reasons for structural and thematic differences: Historical development, compilation, and cultural influences.
Analysis of different scholarly interpretations and debates.
Examination of the Atharvaveda’s relationship to other Vedic texts.
Exploration of the Atharvaveda’s influence on later Indian traditions.
5: Synthesis and Presentation
Synthesis of course material and development of critical perspectives.

Final assessment and review.
Each MAS course comprises 45 hours of teaching and with 2 quizzes and 2 assignments. The number of assignments and quizzes change subject to faculty discretion. Final exams for all courses conducted at the end of the semester.
