Course Description

SAN0103 - (CPSP - Required Course) The third quarter of the Beginner Phase of the Certificate Program in Sanskrit Proficiency, takes the students deeper into Saṃskṛtam grammar. They are introduced to numbers in all three genders, a phenomenon unique to Saṃskṛtam, as well indeclinables, both of which are very important in Saṃskṛtam. They also learn future tense verbs and past participle forms in this course. They further enhance their vocabulary using exercises specifically designed for the purpose. In this quarter, the students begin comprehension of small Saṃskṛtam passages with the help of English translations, and are encouraged to frame their own sentences which help them progress in their learning.

Smt. Parvathi Sriram

Parvathi Sriram is a Physical Therapist by profession and practiced in India prior to moving to Houston. Her area of interests are Sanskrit and Vedanta. She is currently teaching Sanskrit for Arsha Vidya Bhaarati students. She has also been teaching at Balavihar, Chinamya Mission Houston since 2015. Parvathi has been studying Vedanta at Chinmaya Mission Houston since 2014. She also continues her Sanskrit learning at AVB and through Samskrita Bharati.

Course Learning Objectives

In this course Beginning Sanskrit the students will be able to:

  • Identify plural forms of verbs, relationship words and indeclinables.
  • List future tense verb forms and past participles forms.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how numbers vary with genders.
  • Develop the ability to understand short narratives.
  • Recite simple Saṃskṛtam songs and understand their meaning in English.
  • Utilize Saṃskṛtam words and phrases to form short sentences.

Course Content

In this course the students will learn songs in Saṃskṛtam. Throughout this quarter they follow the listen, speak, read and write approach using simple conversations to learn saptakakārāḥ (the seven question words), adverbs, ktavatu (past participle) in singular and plural, sambodhanam (case endings of nouns for addressing), lṛt lakārāḥ (future tense) verb forms, indeclinables, numbers in three genders as adjectives, instrumental case, pairing words, ktva /lyap (perfect participles). Additionally, students learn ślokas and read stories that help reinforce their knowledge of grammar.

Class Structure

Students will have a dedicated 1.5 hours of contact time with the faculty each week. The class is carefully structured to facilitate effective learning in an online face-to-face format. The curriculum is designed to build upon the knowledge gained in previous classes. Regular homework assignments will provide valuable opportunities to practice the concepts covered in class. Successful completion of the course requires the submission of graded homework and the final Quarter End Exam (QEE).
