Course Description

PHS7302 - This course will analyse in detail the sociological consequences of the British colonial narratives on Hindus and India. The colonial narratives of the British transformed India and the Hindu society quite considerably, for the narratives did not remain at the intellectual level alone. They were used for making policies and for the creation of institutions, many of which are still functioning in India.

Course Content

Narratives influence the perception of reality and truth. A distorted narrative or a false narrative produces a distorted perception of reality or truth or “false consciousness.” One of the chief aims of the Postcolonial Hindu Studies concentration is to explore thoroughly how the British studies on India during the colonial era generated a false narrative which distorts the Hindu reality as described in the Hindu texts.

This false narrative, however, has had and continues to have cultural, social, and psychological consequences. Whereas the course Anticolonialism and Postcolonialism studies the psychological consequences of colonization, this one studies the sociological consequences on Hindus and India. The course is divided in two parts: the first goes into the various narratives that were developed on India and Hindus, and the second discusses the sociological and organizational interventions made in light of those narratives.

Class Structure

The class will meet every week on Saturdays from 11 AM to 2 PM PST/ 2 PM to 5 PM EST from [dates]. Every week there will be assigned readings which the students are required to study and come prepared to the class to hold discussions with the instructor and with one another in a self-reflective and engaging manner. The readings will not take more than six hours of study and reflection, though the student is free to devote more than six hours if he or she feels inspired to engage in additional research and reflection.

Students will be required to write a mid-semester paper and a final-term paper. The mid-semester paper should be 4-5 pages long, describing key learnings in the course. In the final week of the class, the student is required to submit a final 15–20-page research paper (minus bibliography) on a topic which agrees with the theme of the course. Both the papers should be double spaced and written in Times New Roman.
