Course Description

SAN0204 - (CPSP - Required Course) In this last fourth quarter of the Intermediate Phase of the Certificate Program in Sanskrit Proficiency , students delve into the captivating world of Pañcatantra Kathāḥ, analyzing and interpreting these ancient tales in Saṃskṛtam. By utilizing the selected text as a foundation, students are able to explore the nuances of the language and further enhance their language skills. Through the interactive nature of the course, students not only develop their ability to analyze and interpret texts, but they also sharpen their communication skills, enabling them to effectively converse in Saṃskṛtam with their cohorts. By the end of this course, students will have gained a deep appreciation for the Pañcatantrakathāḥ, and will have honed their language skills in Saṃskṛtam. Completion of this course marks the conclusion of the Intermediate Phase in the Certificate Program in Saṃskṛtam Proficiency, allowing students to progress to the Advanced Phase.

Smt. Parvathi Sriram

Parvathi Sriram is a Physical Therapist by profession and practiced in India prior to moving to Houston. Her area of interests are Sanskrit and Vedanta. She is currently teaching Sanskrit for Arsha Vidya Bhaarati students. She has also been teaching at Balavihar, Chinamya Mission Houston since 2015. Parvathi has been studying Vedanta at Chinmaya Mission Houston since 2014. She also continues her Sanskrit learning at AVB and through Samskrita Bharati.

Course Learning Objectives

In this course the students will be able to:

  • Employ the grammar learned thus far, in simple writing exercises.
  • Paraphrase stories in Saṃskṛtam.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the accrued grammar using Pañcatantrakathāḥ as a base.
  • Implement potential moods in verbs.
  • Generate written conversations in Saṃskṛtam.

Course content

In this course, the emphasis is on revising and strengthening the understanding of the concepts and grammar covered in the program thus far. Students begin applying grammar accrued to comprehend texts such as Pañcatantrakathāḥ and Hitopadeśa stories. They will continue practicing the classifications of verb roots, including laṭ lakārāḥ (simple present tense), loṭ lakārāḥ (imperative mood), laṅg lakārāḥ (past tense), lṛt lakārāḥ (future tense), and liṅg lakārāḥ (potential mood), throughout this course by engaging in simple writing exercises and conversations. These activities will reinforce their understanding of verb roots, tenses, and moods. Students will apply their acquired knowledge to interpret texts and paraphrase them in Saṃskṛtam.

Class Structure

Students will have a dedicated 1.5 hours of contact time with the faculty each week. The class is carefully structured to facilitate effective learning in an online face-to-face format. The curriculum is designed to build upon the knowledge gained in previous classes. Regular homework assignments will provide valuable opportunities to practice the concepts covered in class. Successful completion of the course requires the submission of graded homework and the final Quarter End Exam (QEE)
