Course Description

SAN0104 - (CPSP - Required Course) The fourth quarter of the Beginner Phase of the Certificate Program in Sanskrit Proficiency signifies the culmination of this phase. By the end of this course, students will have attained mastery in reading and writing in the Devanāgarī script, and will begin to develop an appreciation for the beauty of the language. They will be able to understand and interpret short stories and songs, exploring their meanings in English, and learning the meanings of the subhāśitāni in Saṃskṛtam. Completion of this course marks the conclusion of the Beginner Phase in the Certificate Program in Saṃskṛtam Proficiency, allowing students to progress to the Intermediate Phase.

Smt. Parvathi Sriram

Parvathi Sriram is a Physical Therapist by profession and practiced in India prior to moving to Houston. Her area of interests are Sanskrit and Vedanta. She is currently teaching Sanskrit for Arsha Vidya Bhaarati students. She has also been teaching at Balavihar, Chinamya Mission Houston since 2015. Parvathi has been studying Vedanta at Chinmaya Mission Houston since 2014. She also continues her Sanskrit learning at AVB and through Samskrita Bharati.

Course Learning Objectives

In this course Beginning Sanskrit the students will be able to:

Demonstrate fluency is reading passages in Saṃskṛtam.
Utilize the use of adjectives, gerunds, infinitives, pairing words, and dual forms of nouns and verbs in sentences.
Interpret short passages and stories.
Recite Saṃskṛtam subhāśitāni (wise sayings) and develop an understanding of their meanings in English.
Create short passages in Saṃskṛtam

Course content

In this course Beginning Sanskrit the students focus on enhancing their vocabulary and grammar using an application oriented approach. They will be introduced to new concepts like tumun (infinitives), nouns and verb forms in singular, dual and plural; newer vocabulary like pairing words, antonyms, body parts, relationships, numbers till hundred, words used in comparisons, and more. They explore many prahelikāḥ (riddles), subhāśitāni ( wise sayings), comics, songs and stories in Saṃskṛtam.

Class Structure

Students will have a dedicated 1.5 hours of contact time with the faculty each week. The class is carefully structured to facilitate effective learning in an online face-to-face format. The curriculum is designed to build upon the knowledge gained in previous classes. Regular homework assignments will provide valuable opportunities to practice the concepts covered in class. Successful completion of the course requires the submission of graded homework and the final Quarter End Exam (QEE).
