Course Description

HSF1402 – The practice of Sanātana Dharma encompasses two vital dimensions: Jñāna Kānḍa (knowledge) and Karma Kānḍa (application), with Vedamantra chanting acting as the conduit between the two. Bhagavān Ādi Śaṅkarācārya, in his Sādhana Paṃcaka, enjoins every spiritual aspirant to engage in daily Veda study (Vedo nityam adhīyatām), underscoring the significance of accurate chanting and comprehension of the mantras. Śri Śaṅkarācārya furthe emphasizes the importance of performing karma as prescribed in the Vedas (tadutim karma svanuśṭheeyatām). This course comprehensively covers both dimensions, elucidating the meaning and intonation of mantras while also delving into their application in the three types of rituals - nitya (daily), naimittika (occasional), and kāmya (for specific desired ends) - as well as in festivals - vratas and utsavas.

Course Content

The course covers chanting of Veda mantras, with a special focus on svara (intonation), using selected hymns from the Vedas. These are the hymns that are chanted in all pujas and yajñas at homes, congregations, and at temples. In this module, Vedic hymns addressed to Gaṇapati, the Primordial Puruṣa, Nārāyaṇa, Śri/Lakṣmi, Durgā, and Sarasvati as Medhā Devi are introduced. In addition, the Mantra-Puṣpa, the first mantras of the four Vedas, and the Vedic national anthem are taught.

Class Structure

There will be a minimum of 1 contact hour with the faculty every week. The class is structured in a way that promotes discussion and debate based on self-study and reflection each week. While the content being discussed in each class will be concluded within 60 minutes, the discussion time will be free format, and can continue for an additional 30 minutes maximum. During the course, students will be required to submit one short essay of around 1000 – 1500 words, or videos of their practice. They need not be academic quality papers or professional videos – but should be based on students’ self-reflection on what they have learnt and assimilated so far.
