Course Description

SAN5101 - Vedic Sciences Foundations introduces students to the foundational frameworks and methodologies used in classical Indic technical texts, essential for engaging with primary sources in Vedic and śāstric traditions. Through the study of texts such as Tarka Saṅgraha, Tarka Bhāṣā, Vedānta Sāra, and Artha Saṅgraha, students will examine key structural elements — Adhikārī (qualified learner), Viṣaya (subject matter), Sambandha (connection), and Prayojana (purpose). The course highlights how these frameworks support knowledge preservation, enhance comprehension, and facilitate effective transmission. Students will also compare these methods with the Western scientific approach, gaining insight into their respective strengths and limitations. Practical exercises will train students to apply these frameworks to analyze new texts, enabling them to develop deeper analytical and interpretive skills essential for scholarly research in Vedic sciences and the broader field of Indic knowledge systems.
