Course Description

YOG2101 – The Art of Nonviolent Communication and Ahimsa course is designed to introduce participants to the Gandhian approach to nonviolent communication and its significance as a 21st century skill to be nurtured for a culture of peace. In the backdrop of instances of aggressive or toxic communication, integrating strategies and the Art of nonviolent communication (ahimsa) not only can help us to find inner peace, but also promote a healthy communication ecosystem whether in our families, institutions or the society at large. It helps in building better connections by enrichment of personhood. The overarching goal of the course is to develop an expansive understanding of the Art of nonviolent communication and its applications in our daily lives.

Dr. Vedabhyas Kundu

Dr Vedabhyas Kundu has conducted extensive workshops on different dimensions of nonviolent communication. He is primarily working to promote the Gandhian approach to nonviolent communication. Also doing research to develop an Indian model of nonviolent communication based on our rich scriptures. He has long years of experience of writing and delivering lectures on various aspects of Gandhian philosophy, nonviolent conflict resolution, media and information literacy. He has written both nationally and internationally in all of these areas.

Miss. Mansi Sharma

Miss. Mansi Sharma is a mediator and lawyer who is doing research in the area of integrating nonviolent communication in the mediation process. She teaches in the Gandhian studies department of Punjab University. Her major areas of work are Gandhian approach to mediation, Gandhian approach to public administration, and nonviolent jurisprudence. She has been writing in these areas too.

  • Communicate the efficacy of nonviolent communication for a culture of peace.

Course Content

The course is designed to promote Gandhian nonviolent communication at individual levels, at institutional level and at societal levels. While it will cover the Gandhian approach to nonviolence, it will give a detailed exposition of the approach to nonviolent communication which the Mahatma promoted in practice. The course will cover in-depth the art of nonviolent communication in the age of Metaverse, in the process of mediation, for inner transformation, and for mutual coexistence.

The course is so built that it not just inculcates ‘peace’ traits in an individual but also aids relationship building and emotional bridge building. It provides not just an understanding of peace but also adds meaning to life. The purpose of the course is well being of an individual in form of mental peace and of the world in form of nonviolent mutual co-existence.

Class Structure

There will be a minimum of 2 contact hours with one faculty every week. The content being discussed in each class will be concluded within 90 minutes, the discussion time will be free format, and can continue for an additional 30 minutes. There will be two tests, one MCQ based and an Oral presentation towards the end of the course to evaluate students’ understanding on the concepts discussed.
