20mph speed limit

The 20mph national speed limit was introduced by the Welsh Government on Sunday September 17 2023. It will see the speed limit on most 30mph roads change to 20mph. This legislation changes the default speed limited on restricted roads. These are generally residential or busy pedestrian streets with streetlights. But not all 30mph roads are restricted roads, and these remain at 30mph, and will be signed. Welsh ministers and local authorities have also been able to add 'exceptions' to the new limit. These are areas they don't believe 20mph is suitable and where the limit can safely remain at 30mph. The change is being made as the Welsh Government said evidence shows that lower speeds result in fewer collisions and a reduced severity of injuries. However it is a controversial piece of legislation and has attracted plenty of opposition.
