A would be robber confronted a shop worker with a broken glass bottle, a court heard today. Derryn Grief, 28, had the weapon in the incident in Prestatyn.

Police arrested him days later but he had to be Captor sprayed. He assaulted an officer and damaged a police vehicle. Grief admitted attempted robbery, assaulting an emergency worker and other offences.

A judge at Mold Crown Court jailed him for a total of 34 months. The court heard he went to Aldi in Prestatyn on October 19 and stole whisky worth £9.99.

Two hours later he had become "intoxicated" and went into the Londis store in the town. Holding a broken glass bottle, he approached a member of staff and demanded a bottle of alcohol or, he said, "I'll stab you".

The female worker Afra Ahmed was "terrified", said the judge Her Honour Nicola Saffman. But Grief demanded that another worker Anand Ashok provided him with a bottle of vodka.

However, Mrs Ahmed and Mr Ashok bravely managed to get the intruder out of the store. Police arrested him six days later on October 25 but he kicked and damaged a police vehicle leaving it unusable.

He also resisted arrest and had to be Captor sprayed. But he then assaulted a police officer who suffered grazed hands and knees.

The judge said Mr Ashok has been "extremely resilient" although Mrs Ahmed remains "scared". The judge jailed Grief, of Rhydwen Drive, Rhyl, for 32 months for attempted robbery and nine months to run concurrently for possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

But he must also serve two months in jail for common assault of an emergency worker to run consecutively to the 32 month sentence.

There were no separate penalties for theft of the whisky or criminal damage to the vehicle.
