As I've said many times before, in my opinion you just cannot beat a good, old-fashioned 'spit and sawdust' style local boozer and that's exactly what I found on my latest visit to the pub. Situated just yards away from the town's train station, The Dee in Flint is your quintessential working man and woman's pub.

Being a regular traveller on the train I have visited The Dee many times before and have always been made welcome despite my Denbigh accent being a dead giveaway that I'm not a local. On my latest visit, I popped in on a Wednesday lunchtime and was made very welcome by the barman, Graham, as well as the group of old boys sitting in the corner.

I was only popping in for the one on my way home from prior commitments in the Wrexham area so I went for a pint of Stella Artois which was a reasonable £4.00. I noticed the price list on the wall which showed some very reasonable prices with Carlsberg costing just £3.30, John Smiths £3.25 and Guinness for £4.00.

The Dee sells all the usual spirits and wines also in what is a well-stocked bar. After a few sips of my pint a couple of older gentlemen came over for a chat and we got talking about their fishing exploits in Llyn Brenig, football and politics (probably wise not to visit The Dee if you're a Conservative voter based on this experience!)

Despite being early afternoon the pub was relatively busy and everyone was very friendly, it certainly isn't the sort of place where outsiders would be made to feel unwelcome in my experiences and The Dee clearly does well out of passing trade.

With my pint now two-thirds empty I decided to have a quick go on the quiz machine but in typical fashion it turned out to be a wasted £1 (who knew that Tina Turner was born before Al Pacino and Patrick Stewart?). But as ever this was a lovely visit to what is one of my favourite pubs in Flintshire and if you're ever in need of killing some time while you wait for the train you could do much worse than popping over to The Dee for a quick pint and a good chat with the regulars.
