As part of my takeaway travels across North Wales, I have often been accused of only visiting establishments with favourable ratings and reviews. With that, somewhat fair feedback, ringing in my ears I decided this week to sample cuisine from somewhere which has perhaps not enjoyed overwhelmingly positive online critique.

Now, I do have to begin by saying that many customers of AJ Fish, Kebab and Pizza house in Abergele are very happy with the standard of takeaway fayre they provide and there have many many who've given a five star rating on Tripadvisor. Despite that, reviews have been somewhat eclectic with the proverbial mixed bag of reviews.

I arrived at AJ's on a Tuesday afternoon with an open mind however and despite the standard heavy traffic in the town centre (Abergele feels like Manhattan on a weekday afternoon) the shop was quiet. The menu is vast, with almost all tastes catered for although my original choice was unavailable.

I decided that I liked the sound of the southern fried chicken box meal so I decided on that. After a few minutes however, the gentleman (after conversing with another member of staff) said that they didn't have any chicken.

Strange, I thought, given the number of chicken based meals visible on the overhead menu. Never mind, I opted for a classic doner meat and chips with salad and mayo.

After ten minutes the food was ready and I was away back to my car in standard Tommy'r Takeaways fashion. The portion size was very pleasing and they certainly didn't spare any expense with the salad, which was very fresh and tasty.

The doner meat was the downside for me however, it was very thinly sliced and thus not as tasty as it could have been had they cut the meat a bit thicker. The chips were reasonably good though and I said the salad was of good quality.

Overall though, this wasn't a fantastic kebab but I certainly wouldn't say it was awful either. Given the onliune reviews of AJ's it seems quite apt that I should give it a middle-of-the-road rating and whilst I'm sure they'll continue to please their hardcore customers I would say that there are better options locally if I'm being a little bit harsh - nonetheless, not bad.
