Once considered Wales' highest village, Bwlchgwyn is a beautiful rural community yet just a ten minute drive from Wrexham city centre. Sadly, the village lost its title of highest in Wales a few years ago to Trefil in Blaenau Gwent, but at a height of over 1,000 feet it can still lay claim to being the highest in North Wales.

At the centre of the picturesque dwelling is the King's Head - a restaurant/pub with a burgeoning reputation. One glance at Tripadvisor suggests that the pub attracts people from miles around with their extensive menu and Sunday dinners particularly well praised, as well as the compliments on the wide range of drinks available.

I made the half hour trip over the Nant y Garth pass from my Vale of Clwyd home on a windy Friday lunchtime and decided to phone ahead to place my takeaway order. The girl on the phone was very friendly and helpful - even running through the huge menu as I pondered my order.

After a short period of deliberation I decided on the 'King burger and chips' option which cost a reasonable £12.95 - decent pricing for a rural pub in my opinion. I arrived at around 1pm and was delighted to note that the staff were equally as friendly in person as they were over the phone.

After a two minute wait the food was ready and I was able to head back to the car to enjoy it. I decided to head back up the hill to a lay-by offering spectacular views across the Clwydian Hills to the west and even as far afield as Frodsham and the Cheshire Plains to the east.

The burger was deliciously tasty as well - two beef patties, bacon and melted cheddar - fantastic stuff, my only grumbkle was the bap which was a little flat, but still tasty enough. The chips were decent also - think more chippy-style chips than handcut homemade ones.

The burger was the highlight though and it was definitely worth the price. I know £12.95 would be considered a little bit steep for a kebab house burger or a chip shop one but baring in mind this was pub grub I think it was pretty fairly priced.

So I loved my brief visit and as a huge Wrexham AFC fan and regular at the Racecourse I will definitely be back in the near future to sample some other items on the vast menu at the King's Head.
