As a huge fan of a fry-up I've visited plenty of great cafes and eateries across North Wales. One thing I haven't tried previously however is a breakfast challenge, an increasingly popular phenomenon made famous by various TV shows and YouTube food critics.
When I was alerted to Blod's Coffee Corner's take on the challenge I immediately decided to attempt their 666 Devil's Breakfast Challenge. The challenge costs £20 to take on and if you manage to devour the mountain of fried food in front of you within 40 minutes the breakfast costs you nothing and you get 25% off your next visit.
I arrived at the Colwyn Bay cafe at around 1pm on a Thursday afternoon and was greeted warmly by Tyler, the manager and owner since January of this year. She informed me that I was only the second person to try the challenge so far - unsurprising given its difficulty.

After a short-ish wait of around 20 minutes (not bad considered the sheer quantity of food needing to be cooked) I was presented with two plates stacked high with belly-busting grub.
Ten slices of toast, six fried eggs, six hash browns, six sausages, six rashers of bacon, tomatoes, baked beans and mushrooms - I was sweating just looking at it quite frankly. But I wasn't turning back now, the staff gave me the thumbs up signalling the start of the stopwatch and I embarked on my mammoth task.

The first thought was that the food was very tasty - I got stuck into the sausages, bacon and beans first and they were delicious. I looked across the table at my sister's reasonably priced medium breakfast with envy (£6.90 for what would be considered a good, yet achievable portion size).
After ten minutes or so I was beginning to struggle slightly - I was becoming a little more conservative with my ambitions, muttering to myself that I'd be happy to finish half of my food. The tasty grub was still enjoyable however and I was able to get a good sample of everything - the sausage and bacon a particular highlight for me.
Alas, as the clock ticked down towards the end I was a defeated man and wasn't even able to finish half of the food. Thankfully Blod's let you take the rest of it home and most of it I was able to eat later on in the day.
So I had failed in my quest, but I did really enjoy it and I have to sincerely cast doubt on anyone being able to complete this challenge - perhaps Adam Richman of Man vs Food fame, he was in North Wales recently as well. It is a bit gimmick-y in truth but I'm all for local businesses trying something different so hats off to Blod's for thinking up this venture.
I'm off for a lie down.
