It may feel the region is fairly well covered when it comes to supermarkets. But according to the brands themselves there is capacity for more, with a number of plans in the pipeline.

Tesco and Asda both have plans to introduce additional stores in the coming months while Aldi and Lidl each have a list of target towns they are looking at.

Here we list the communities where the chains are looking to open new sites.

At one time Tesco seemed to be regularly adding more, and bigger, stores around the region but that quick expansion came to an end over a decade ago.

However they now plan to open a new Express site on the high street in Llandudno. The company wants to take on the former Poundland unit on Mostyn Street, with proposals submitted to planners.

Tesco said: "We’re excited to be working on plans for a new Tesco Express store in Llandudno."

No date has yet been given for the opening.

Asda is also looking to increase the presence of convenience stores in North Wales. Asda's £611m deal for the Co-op's petrol station business has been cleared by Britain's competition regulator.

The North Wales locations included in the 130 site buyout are at Coedpeth near Wrexham, Old Colwyn, and at Rhuddlan. These will be converted to Asda stores in the coming months.

The supermarket giant is also rolling out “Asda On the Move” sites inside their EG Group forecourts, a brand also run by Asda owners Mohsin and Zuber Issa.

Lidl

  • Caernarfon

  • Chester (including Broughton)

Aldi has updated its target town list for Wales as it continues its UK expansion. The German discounter announced this spring that it will open 100 new stores across the UK over the next two years.

The supermarket giant has pledged to invest £1.3 billion in a bid to further grow its retail estate. Aldi, which now has more than 920 stores across the UK, is searching for freehold town-centre or edge-of-centre sites suitable for property development.

It is also going through the planning process for a store in Pwllheli.
