Located on a steep hill, just off St Peter’s Square in Ruthin, is the rebranded CarniBoar restaurant, which is part of the north Wales Fat Boar chain. It claims to offer everything you would expect from the usual Fat Boar but with a slightly meatier feel!

It is basically a steakhouse with all the trimmings. We were here to try out their legendary “Special Box”, which is a basically takeaway deal that changes daily.

The deal on the day we visited offered two steak burgers, a dirty hot dog, classic sticky sausages. Bang Bang chicken bites and dirty fries, for only £25. You can message them directly on Facebook Messenger and the food is available for collection any time after 4pm.

We ordered at about 5pm and the food was ready to be collected at 5.45pm. We arrived at the restaurant underneath the rebranded CarniBoar sign and waited by the bar, which had a variety of wine bottles and cocktail mixes behind it.

The takeaway was ready and we were told that they had put it into two smaller boxes as they had run out of the normal-sized ones. The box felt warm and the contents heavy as we took them to the car.

When we got home, we were pretty mesmerized by the amount of food underneath the lid. The food looked a little messier than the actual picture on their Facebook page but that could have been because of the smaller boxes.

There were so many dirty fries on display that it resembled a pizza from far away. The seasoned chips were smothered in chilli peppers and melted cheese were plentiful, tasty and very moreish.

I suppose it’s no secret that they are packed full of calories and probably not that good for your digestive system but you just can’t stop eating them anyway. The Fat Boar has always been famous for their sticky sausages, which have been part of their menu since the first restaurant opened.

The cocktail sausages are glazed in sesame oil, honey and soy to give them a sweet-savoury stickiness that is pretty well impossible to resist. I dipped the mini sausages into a plastic tub full of garlic mayonnaise.

The dirty hot dog was a bratwurst sausage smothered in nacho cheese, crispy onions and seasoned with chilli and coriander to make it spicy. There was only one hot dog but it was so big that we cut it in half and shared it.

We also had a load of Bang Bang chicken bites, which were misshaped balls of breaded chicken drizzled with a mixture of Sriracha, honey and a sweet chilli sauce. They were really addictive and one of the highlights of the special box takeaway for me.

The steak burger had a flame-grilled tang and was stuffed with bacon and cheese. The bap had kept its firmness despite being packed in a box full of other saucy goodies so held in the patty nicely.

However, I was really struggling at this point so perhaps should have eaten it first. I felt like a fat boar myself as I grappled with the weighty burger and a very full stomach.

The amount of food you get for £25 is really impressive and a nice alternative to other takeaways as it offers something different. There was easily enough food for a family of four but you might need to burn the calories off afterwards.

It’s worth keeping an eye on their Facebook page as they often offer some great deals such as’ Steak Club.’ The first rule of Steak Club is that you can get an 8oz Welsh ribeye with all the trimmings from £15.

They also put on a very popular boozy brunch that offers two hours of unlimited fizz, cocktails and brunch for £37 a person. Or indulge in a more gentile afternoon tea for £16.50 per person or £20 with fizz. They require 24 hours’ notice and a £10 deposit.
