A series of roadworks are planned across North Wales this week ahead of the festive period. Six projects are due to get underway, mostly on arterial roads, though the work will be largely carried out overnight.
Some is routine maintenance but most of the work involves resurfacing and patching repairs. Three sections of the A55 will have overnight restrictions. Also affected will be stretches of the A483 near Wrexham and the new A487 Felinheli bypass, Caernarfon.
Traffic Wales said carriageway closures will be in place and diversions set up. In most cases, minimal disruption is expected, though affected businesses in Flintshire will be offered extra signage.
“The works are being carried out overnight in December when traffic flows are historically lower to minimise disruption,” said Traffic Wales. The six sets of roadworks are outlined below.
A55 near Old Colwyn
- Date: One night, December 7-8, 8pm-6am.
- Where: Westbound carriageway between junction 23 Llanddulas and junction 22 Old Colwyn.
- What: Carriageway patching repairs.
- Impact: Full westbound carriageway closure.
Diversions: Off the westbound A55 along the A547 through Llanddulas and Old Colwyn. Traffic will rejoin the A55 at Old Colwyn.
A487 Felinheli bypass
- Date: Three nights, between December 4-8.
- Where: North and southbound carriageways of the A487 Felinheli bypass.
- What: Routine maintenance.
- Impact: Short closures of each carriageway on alternative nights, as follows:
- Dec 4: Southbound closure, 2am-4.30am
- Dec 6: Southbound closure, 12am-2am
- Dec 6: Northbound closure, 2am-4.30am
- Dec 8: Northbound closure, 12am-2am
- Dec 8: Southbound closure, 2am-3am
Diversions: Via Bangor Road and Caernarfon Road through Felinheli.

A483 near Wrexham
- Date: One night, December 5-6, 7.30pm-6am.
- Where: Various locations between Junction 1 Ruabon and Junction 5 Mold Road. Northbound, between junctions 3 and 5. Southbound, between junctions 5 and 4.
- What: Surface patching repairs and and road markings.
- Impact: Full carriageway closures.
Diversions:
- Northbound: Traffic diverted on to B5605 Ruabon, with signed diversions to Junction 3 Croesfoel.
- Southbound: Traffic diverted onto B541 Mold Road, with signed diversion to Junction 4 Ruthin Road.

A55 near Ewloe
- Dates: Two nights, December 6-8, 8pm-6am.
- Where: A55 westbound from Junction 33B near Ewloe, to Junction 33, Northop Interchange.
- What: Essential resurfacing work.
- Impact: Full westbound closure, plus closures of nearby locations as follows:
- Smithy Lane, Alltami.
- Junction of Pinfold Lane junction with westbound A55.
- A55 westbound continuation slip at Junction 34 Ewloe.
Diversions: A55 westbound traffic will be diverted at J33B near Ewloe, via the A494 and A5119 to the A55 Northop Interchange at Junction 33. "Localised and bespoke arrangements" will be in place for access to commercial premises affected.
A55 Penmaenbach Tunnel
- Date: One night, December 4-5, 7pm-7am.
- Where: Westbound A55 Penmaenbach Tunnel.
- What: Routine checks.
- Impact: Full westbound closure.
Diversions: Around the headland on the eastbound A55 via a contraflow. A 3.2m width restriction in place for larger vehicles.
Conwy Valley
- Dates: December 4-19.
- Where: Tal-y-Cafn to Ty’n-Y-Groes road.
- What: Wales & West Utilities is upgrading gas pipes in the Ty’n-Y-Groes area.
- Impact: Road closed to all traffic.
Diversions: A signposted diversion route will be put in place. Access will be maintained for residents.
