Sewage alerts have been issued for three popular beaches on Anglesey, by environmental campaigners. They cover Benllech, Rhosneigr and Aberfraw.

The warning to beachgoers, has been issued by Surfers Against Sewage, who monitor water quality on the UK coastline and campaign against plastic pollution.

According to the environmentalists, sewage has been discharged at the three beaches in the last 48 hours. It follows heavy downpours, which saw much of North Wales under a yellow rain alert yesterday.

Aberfraw:

The full alert says: Pollution Alert: "Storm sewage has been discharged from a sewer overflow in this location within the past 48 hours.

"Aberffraw Bay is an unspoiled sandy beach measuring approximately 900m in length. It is located east of Aberffraw village, across the Afon Ffraw.

"It is backed by an extensive sand dune system designated as a Site of Special Scientific (SSSI).

"The River Ffraw runs out to sea at the northern end of the beach where there can be good breaks but there are dangerous rips in the area so beginners ought to be careful! Aberffraw Sewage Pumping Station discharges directly into the Ffraw upstream of the bathing water."

"Situated on the east coast of Anglesey, the beach is sandy, measuring approximately 1.25 kilometres in length, and is partly backed by a concrete promenade and the town of Benllech, and partly by limestone cliffs along the southern half of the beach towards St Davids.

"The old outfall that discharges at low water onto the beach has been retained as an emergency outfall."
