Seven DWP benefits and money changes coming up in December 2023

For many, Christmas means spending more money than usual in a month as people buy presents, go out to celebrate with friends and stock up on food and drink.

In light of the continuing cost of living crisis, households will want keep a close eye on their finances and make every penny count. According to LancsLive, some will receive support from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) in the coming weeks.

This includes £600 worth of cost of living help for pensioners and Christmas bonus for millions of people on certain benefits. However, there will also be some key changes being made to many households' financial situations which will be coming from both the Bank of England and Office for National Statistics

Here's a breakdown of what December 2023 has in store and the key dates to be aware of:

DWP Christmas bonus - First full week of December:

The DWP will soon start to pay £10 to people claiming certain benefits. You need to be in receipt of one of the following benefits in the "qualifying week" - which is usually the first full week of December - to receive the bonus. You must also be present or "ordinarily resident" in the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man or Gibraltar during the qualifying week.

  • Adult Disability Payment

  • Armed Forces Independence Payment

  • Attendance Allowance

  • Carer’s Allowance

  • Child Disability Payment

  • Constant Attendance Allowance (paid under Industrial Injuries or War Pensions schemes)

  • Contribution-based Employment and Support Allowance (once the main phase of the benefit is entered after the first 13 weeks of claim)

  • Disability Living Allowance

  • Incapacity Benefit at the long-term rate

  • Industrial Death Benefit (for widows or widowers)

  • Mobility Supplement

  • Pension Credit - the guarantee element

  • Personal Independence Payment (PIP)

  • State Pension (including Graduated Retirement Benefit)

  • Severe Disablement Allowance (transitionally protected)

  • Unemployability Supplement or Allowance (paid under Industrial Injuries or War Pensions schemes)

  • War Disablement Pension at State Pension age

  • War Widow’s Pension

  • Widowed Mother’s Allowance

  • Widowed Parent’s Allowance

  • Widow’s Pension

£300 Cost of Living deadline - December 10:

You may be eligible to receive the £300 cost of living payment if you're able to backdate a Pension Credit deadline. In order to do this, you had to of been state pension age between August 18, 2023 and September 17, 2023.
