A simple and handy cafe called Caffi Alma in Abergwyngregyn is just off the A55. And if you're visiting Aber Falls it's a perfect spot to rest afterwards and grab a light meal or a cuppa before your journey home.

I visited it on Wednesday after doing just that. And I was grateful that I could take a breather and have a bite to eat for half an hour or so.

This eaterie in a former garage building is run by the affable Mike Jones, 65, with the cafe being named after his mum. It must be said he is lucky to be there at all having survived an appalling accident in 2019 and if prompted he'll tell his story.

He was doing some carpentry work on the site when he accidentally severed most of his left hand with a saw. Numbed with shock, he waited an hour and a half for an ambulance (with paramedics apparently not knowing the extent of the injury) but didn't bleed out.

"In 50 per cent of cases the brain switches off," reflected Mike. Paramedics did arrive and he was being treated in a land ambulance when someone bizarrely came over and enquired about buying his van.

Anyway he was "white as a sheet" by then and was soon flown by Wales Air Ambulance to the Royal Stoke University Hospital. Whilst on ketamine, he felt much better believing everyone was Mr or Mrs Jones. "I've only just come down from that trip," he jokes.

Now he's got a metal plate in his left wrist but it was re-attached and he was able to heat up and carry my panini which I realised was more of a feat than it would first appear to be, once I'd heard his story.

It seems churlish to describe the cheese and tomato panini as fine and a latte as lovely. I'm just glad that Mike was able to serve me at all.
