A nostalgic video of Wrexham from 1991 has conjured some old memories of the town.

Using a 90s style video camera, Tracy Benjafield took the footage while sitting in her car around the town centre almost 30 years ago.

Taken on market day, with iconic views of the old Beast Market from the ‘ASDA flyover’ and a busy high street full of busy shops, in some parts, the town is almost unrecognisable from today.

The most notable difference is the layout of the town, which has drastically changed since the building of Eagles Meadow shopping centre on the former flyover site.

Starting on Bradley Road, the footage takes you along Bellevue Road - that is now blocked off as a one way street - and up along Brook Street towards Town Hill - which at the time had no link road at the end.

The bustling High Street then was filled with niche shops, high street chains, pubs, banks and estate agents - a contrast of what we see today because of the rise of changes in modern retail.

Since the early 90s, a number of major shopping names have disappeared from Wrexham’s heart, reflecting a decline in the town’s retail economy.

Eagles Meadow, on market day, was one of the biggest open air sales areas in the country. The Beast Market on a Monday retailed all sorts of goods, including hardware, fashion and food.

The most familiar sight in the 14 minute long footage is St Giles Church, unchanged in appearance and still standing proud overlooking the town.

Documenting the town’s biggest changes over the years, Peter Leslie has also generated hundreds of images since the noughties, showing how much things have changed.

Some include the demolition of Wrexham’s Hightown flats. They were built in 1970 and stood for 41 years. Others show how Eagles Meadow, one of the town’s biggest developments in recent years, came together on the site of the former flyover.
