Wrexham was recently named as one of the cleanest places to eat in the UK, with North Wales' biggest city coming near the top of the charts when it comes to cleanliness of food establishments. That came as no surprise to myself, with literally hundreds of fantastic restaurants, takeaways and eateries dotted across the city.

Having sampled several of the highly rated local chippies in recent times I thought I'd venture somewhere that has perhaps received mixed reviews from customers. Central Kebab and Pizza has been a household name in Wrexham for decades and its location at the heart of the city's nightlife has meant that it does a roaring trade up until the early hours.

Having visited on several occasions after a night out in the past, I thought I'd give the place a go a bit earlier. I arrived at around 6pm and it was very much the calm before the storm - it was eerily quiet in all honesty.

Despite the lack of customers there were still plenty of staff on duty and after a scan at the huge menu I decided to go for the classic doner kebab - which cost a reasonable £6.60. This was excellent value for money, it was absolutely huge and the portion of salad was more than generous - the presentation wasn't the best, it looked thrown together in truth, but for me it's all about the taste.

I made my way back to my car to give it a try and I was not disappointed. I'm not usually a big lover of salad in all honesty but to Central's credit the lettuce, tomato and red cabbage was delicious and fresh - it complemeted the doner meat and pitta bread superbly well.

The doner meat itself was succulent and tender and genuinely very tasty. The only downside was the pitta bread wasn't the best I've ever tried, but the filling was so good it definitely cancelled out the slightly doughy bread.

I have had a bit of a mixed bag from Central in the past and it is perhaps a place that struggles for consistency - something that is reflected in the online reviews which are very wide-ranging to say the least. But on this occasion they smashed it out of the park and if you ever find yourself stumbling out of one of the dozens of nearby pubs and clubs I'd definitely recommend a tasty and reasonably priced kebab from Central.
