A former Wrexham councillor has been accused of sending messages relating to the sexual abuse of children. Paul Williams, 55, had represented the Smithfield ward for Plaid Cymru on Wrexham county council after being elected in the spring of 2021.

He resigned in January this year, citing health problems. Williams has now been accused of sending a series of messages relating to the sexual abuse of children, that were grossly offensive or of an indecent, obscene or menacing character.

The offences are alleged to have taken place between June 1 and August 26 last year. He has denied committing the offences and a trial will take place at Wrexham Magistrates Court on December 21.

Williams had been a member of Plaid for more than 15 years but the party said he has not been a member of the party for nearly a year after resigning his position. As well as serving on Wrexham council he had been a Caia Park Community Councillor since 2015 and a previous chair of Smithfield Residents Association.
