Even in these warm conditions at the height of the Welsh summer, you can't beat a good old-fashioned roast dinner. There are plenty of pubs, restaurants and cafes offering the traditional sunday fayre but one pub on the Conwy-Denbighshire border is gaining an excellent reputation for great value grub.

The Mayquay, located right next to the 'Blue Bridge' linking Rhyl and Kinmel Bay, offers a fantastically inexpensive roast dinner that you can either eat in or take away. The £5.95 meal has been attracting both locals and tourists to the seaside spot.

I arrived at the Mayquay at around 4pm on a Thursday afternoon and the pub was relatively busy with a mixture of afternoon drinkers and diners dotted around the more than ample seating area. After a very brief wait of less than 10 minutes my food was ready and I made my way out and along the beautiful marina between the two towns.

Now, I'm well aware that eating a takeaway roast dinner by the sea is far from traditional behaviour but it was quite a liberating experience in truth and the views surrounding the Clwyd Estuary were among the finest I've seen whilst tucking into a roast potato or two!

The meal was genuinely fantastic value - for £5.95 you get four generous slices of turkey, carrots, roast potatoes, peas and of course a giant Yorkshire pudding. Superb.

Taste-wise, it was pretty good. Not the nicest I've ever had I have to be honest there, but for £5.95 it would be unreasonable to expect Michelin star quality.

Don't get me wrong though, the food was tasty enough - the turkey was nice, the Yorkshire pudding was fantastic and the carrots were of good texture and full of flavour. The downside for me was the inclusion of sweetcorn - should be nowhere near a roast dinner, just my opinion.

But overall if you're after a good value, no frills roast dinner then you'll struggle to find better value than the "fabulous" Mayquay, as one online reviewer called it. I certainly will be back again soon - but next time I'll be requesting the no sweetcorn option.
