About Our Unique Retreat
An Immersive four-day retreat from August 29, 2025 to September 1, 2025 The Hindu University of America invites all to join this spiritually uplifting celebration of The Devi in all her facets. This in person retreat will be held in the sylvan surroundings of the
University campus at the Pine Lake Retreat in Orlando, Florida, USA.
The Vedas declare that Ishwara’s Shaki (power) is innate and produces different effects. This Shakti is termed PARAA-SHAKTI in Sanskrit. Paraasya shaktihi vividhaiva shruyate
Paraa Shakti manifests as Iccha (desire), Jnana (knowledge), and Kriya (action). As Iccha Shakti, She is Lakshmi. As Jnaana Shakti, she is Saraswathi, and as Kriya Shakti She is Uma Gauri.
To experience all these aspects, we will explore the Vedas, Upanishads, Stotras, Purana, Murthilakshana (iconography), Sangeeta (music), Tirthas (sacred sites) and their Sthala Puranas (legends).

EXPERIENCING DEVI THROUGH MUSIC – Dr. Kanniks Kannikeswaran
Music is regarded as a ‘Moksha margam’ in the Hindu dharmic traditions. Devi is revered as the very embodiment of music. Several composers and poets have expressed their devotion to Devi over the years with their words and music.
An experiential understanding of some of these works transports devotees to a different level of consciousness.
‘Experiencing Devi through Music’ is a workshop that takes participants on a musical experiential journey through works on Shiva. Conducted by internationally renowned composer, music educator and scholar Dr. Kanniks Kannikeswaran, the evening sessions offered during the ‘Experiencing Devi’ retreat will take participants on a journey through time and space and music.
Participants will get to understand compositions such as:
• Short Geethams /Kirtans/Bhajans on Saraswati, Lakshmi and Durga
• Nottuswara Sahityas of Dikshitar on Saraswati, Lakshmi and Durga
• Short Kritis
• Musical experience of Adi Sankara’s slokas
• Folk songs on Devi
Participants will understand the history and the significance of these compositions and participate in the sing-along experience. These evening sessions and two post-lunch sessions will perfectly complement the day long sessions on Devi.
Note: This weekend long workshop is offered in parallel with ‘Experiencing Devi’ , offered by Shri Ashwath ji. The content and sessions will be coordinated in order to get the best out of both sessions.
An ability to sing or prior training in Karnatic or Hindustani music is NOT a pre-requisite of this class. What is needed is a healthy interest in music, and the willingness to explore Devi through music.
