The rollout of a default 20mph has generated more noise and anger than a motorway at rush hour but one intervention this week really caught my eye. Former North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner Arfon Jones highlighted the bewildering array of different speed limits on one of the main roads in and around Wrexham - the A541 (Mold Road).

Mr Jones gently pointed out that the dual carriageway to Gwersyllt is "50mph...40...20...50...20 by the time you get to Cefn-y-Bedd! The unclassified heavily potholed road to Summerhill is still 60mph!"

The retired police inspector, suggested the confusing layout would prove to be a "money-making scheme". Leaving that argument to one side his analysis of the impact on the humble motorist appeared to me to be spot on.

So I decided to test drive the route with a little trepidation. I planned to follow the route that Mr Jones criticised and during the drive I had to keep reminding myself about the new 20mp speed limit.

I found myself constantly checking the speedometer much more than I ever did before September 17.

I have a genuine worry that this will become something that will cause law-abiding motorists to have accidents as they worry more about sticking to the limit and causing them to momentarily take their eyes off the road.

I'd already been out for a short and leisurely Sunday drive on the first day of the new speed limit and that feel almost unnaturally slow compared to the 30mph that was in place no less than 24 hours earlier.

But because the limit changes so often on the A541 you have to slow down quite suddenly and this feels more dangerous to me. The constant speeding up and slowing down to stay within the correct speed limit was mentally exhausting.

At one point I ended up in the situation I dreaded - being tailgated by another car. I felt a pressure to go faster burning into the back of my head and as the queue of cars behind me grew that only intensified. One of them even overtook me, clearly fed up that I was abiding by the 20mph limit.

I worry that things like this will happen more often. All it takes is one frustrated driver thinking they can zip ahead of people abiding by the 20mph limit and there could be a crash.

As for the A541, having so many different limits is hugely frustrating for motorists and could even be dangerous.

The merits of 20mph limits in built-up residential areas and outside schools are difficult to argue with. But placing them on main roads seems like a step too far.

But there is no sign of a u-turn and it looks like they are here to stay. I never thought not breaking the law would be so difficult.
