A demolition plan has been submitted to clear land for a new Lidl store in North Wales. The German discounter wants to open a new site on Connah's Quay High Street, relocating from its current unit at Deeside Retail Park.

The store would be at the former Co-op store. Planning for the new store was secured a year ago but so far no progress has been made.

Now a demolition notice is in for the old Co-op unit. This signals that Lidl could be ready to press on with the new development. Lidl has several target sites in North Wales.

This will now be considered by planners at Flintshire council. Lidl's current site in the town has been placed on the market.

Lidl have said the new larger store - with 2,179 sq metres of floorspace - will provide additional local jobs.

Lidl said: “The store will require up to 40 members of staff (25 full time equivalent) in order to operate in the most efficient manner. All 15 existing members of staff (at Deeside Retail Park) will transfer to the replacement store on its opening. The new jobs created by the proposal will comprise both full and part-time roles, with part-time hours ranging from nine to 36 hours.

“It is expected that the majority, if not all, of the new members of staff at the store will be local people living in the local area. The recruitment process will commence four to six months prior to store opening to ensure that all staff gain sufficient training and experience at the existing store prior to the opening of the proposed replacement store.”

The target date for a decision on the application is December 6. If approved then the project could get underway early next year.
