Tucked away on a side street at the centre of Ruthin is a tearoom that's proved a hit in the town since it opened at the start of the year. Teacups Tearoom can be found just off St Peter's Square on Upper Clwyd Street, near Small Plates.

The cosy café may only be able to seat around a dozen diners, but what it lacks in size it makes it up for with a great selection of cakes and a very reasonably priced menu that includes all day breakfasts, sandwiches, paninis, light bites - and, of course, afternoon tea.

We paid a visit earlier this week on a typically miserable November day for lunch and a piece of cake - and having heard good things in the town, we weren't disappointed. We were welcomed by the charming interior and friendly staff as we stepped in from the showers outside.

As the rain trickled down the windows opposite our table, I set about choosing from the menu. This took a while as it was a struggle to choose between the breakfast options, the light bite staples, and the specials on offer.

I eventually opted for a full breakfast, which was just £7.95, and a cappuccino, which cost £2.75. Barring the afternoon tea (which must be ordered 24 hours in advance), this is about as far as you can push the boat out at Teacups Tearoom, with the paninis all priced under £6 and the sandwiches and baps just £2.95.

It's an incredibly reasonably-priced menu which makes the tearoom as great a spot in the town to grab a quick lunch as it is to sit down for a cake, a scone, or an elaborate milkshake (of which there's a few to choose from). The full breakfast I ordered arrived pretty swiftly as well, despite it being a relatively busy time of day.

It normally comes with egg and beans, but I asked if I could swap them for an extra hash brown, which was not a problem. At under £8 it's hard to go wrong, but the breakfast itself was very satisfying with thick rashers of bacon, three sausages, nice mushrooms and tomatoes, and black pudding - which seems at some point to have lost its status as a full breakfast essential, appearing more on menus as an add-on these days.

As I went towards the counter to pay, I saw an array of homemade cakes that all looked too good to ignore. Paying for the breakfast I also ordered a slice of coffee cake to go.

You'll have to take my word for it, or check out the tearoom's Facebook page, that the cake looked very good when it was on display on the counter. Sadly, it didn't fare well on the journey back, and by the time I arrived home, it had become a deconstructed mess but a very tasty one.

So if you're in Ruthin and you're looking for a quick lunch or breakfast without breaking the bank, or want to sit down for a nice afternoon tea, or simply a cake and a hot drink, Teacups Tearoom is well worth a visit.
