Development rights for a controversial wind farm in North Wales are being offered for sale. Pant y Maen, a 136ha site near Nantglyn, Denbighshire, has planning permission for seven large turbines.

If built, each will have tip heights of 125 metres and will tower over the adjacent Llyn Bran, Bylchau, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The wind farm secured a revised planning consent in January 2022, some 10 years after the project was first launched.

The orginal proposals were opposed by Clwyd West MS Darren Millar and were refused by Denbighshire Council on the grounds of landscape and visual impact. They were later approved on appeal, despite the Welsh Government’s Planning Inspector recommending refusal.

Mr Millar also took a dim view of an amended proposal submitted in March 2020 which sought to raise turbine heights by 70ft, from 334ft (103m) to 406ft (125m). At the time he said the revised plans would “add insult to injury” to those who opposed the original planning application.

The new tip heights were approved in January 2022. Pant y Maen lies in an area designated as suitable for large-scale wind development by the Welsh Government.

The wind farm’s grid connection has an export capacity of 21,860kVA and a connection date of 2026. Henry Grant, energy consultant at agents Savills Earth, said: “This is an attractive opportunity to build a low-carbon energy project, which will generate the same amount of energy as consumed by 25,000 homes every year.”
