Motorists have expressed their relief at road signs being changed at a slip road off the A55 which left some drivers bewildered. The signs, off the eastbound slip road at St Asaph, indicated the speed limit remained at 30mph on entry into the city centre - even after the introduction of the default 20mph limit last month.

Local man David Berry said the sign left him scratching his head: "Coming off the A55 near the Talardy the speed limit signage read 30mph and there weren't any other signs as you went around the roundabout and past the Applegreen Garage.

"It was quite confusing really because although it is definitely a 20mph limit entering the city, the signs hadn't been replaced until recently so people who perhaps weren't from the area would continue to drive at 30mph."

He added: "Thankfully now the signs have been changed, but I'm not quite sure why it wasn't changed with all the others."

A North Wales Police spokesperson said: "Road signage is a matter for the local authority/trunk road agency so it's best to contact them." Denbighshire County Council and the trunk road agency were approached for comment.

Opinions on the new 20mph legislation continue to be divided with strong views on both sides of the debate. We revealed last week how the minister in charge of the changes, Lee Waters, has been the victim of unacceptable abuse from some quarters.

North Wales Live revealed recently that the Welsh Government will allow local authorities the final say on speed limits and will only overrule councils who want to change 20mph roads back to 30mph if they make a "glaringly obvious" breach of guidance.
