A man was left with a broken nose and multiple other injuries after two brothers attacked him during a night out. Justin Faddes, of West Kinmel Street in Rhyl, and his older brother Shayne Faddes, of Wellinton Road in Rhyl, both appeared before a judge at Mold Crown Court.

They had each admitted to assaulting a person thereby occasioning them actual bodily harm. Prosecuting, Thomas McLoughlin, showed the moment the men attacked Michael Hartley on Water Street in Rhyl back in April 2022.

He explained how the brothers had been out drinking and playing pool in a local pub where Mr Hartley had also been. There was later a confrontation outside The Cove that saw the Faddes' "square up" to Mr Hartley at around 3am.

Mr McLoughlin said a fight broke out further down the street. The court was shown footage of Shayne kicking Mr Hartley from behind before delivering more blows before dad-of-two Justin also got involved.

The video, which lasted minutes, showed Mr Hartley attempting to flee with both brothers chasing, before Shayne launches a brown wheelie bin at him, knocking the victim to the floor.

Mr McLoughlin said the brothers were seen "taking turns" to strike Mr Hartley whilst he is on the concrete. Both Justin and Shayne were seen kicking the defenceless man in the head as a member of the public made efforts to break up the assault.

The brothers eventually walked away, leaving Mr Hartley with a fractured eye socket and broken nose amongst other injuries. When the police questioned the Faddes', they claimed that their victim was carrying a knife before trying to claim that Mr Hartley has "faked" some of the attack injuries.

Defending Shayne, Andrew Green said his client and his brother had "no other intention that night but to enjoy a quiet night in the pub". He said that did not excuse their actions, which were caught on camera, but claimed to have been provoked by the victim beforehand.

Representing Justin, Gareth Bellis said his client could not argue against the "clear" CCTV presented to the court and accepted the role he played in this violent attack. He pointed out that, during the delay in bringing this case to its conclusion, Justin has been out on bail and not reoffended since that night - proving he can stay out of trouble.

Recorder Wyn Lloyd Jones said he "wouldn't be doing his job properly" if he didn't send both of the Faddes brothers to jail for one year each. He added: "A suspended sentence would not be sufficient punishment for what is clearly a sickening two-on-one piece of street violence for which you should be thoroughly ashamed of yourselves.

"No matter how [Mr Hartley] behaved that night, he did not deserve what we have seen. What you should have done was walk away in the completely opposite direction."
