Thousands of people take citizenship tests in the UK each year - with the majority passing!

The exam, known as Life in the UK, is part of an application to become an official citizen or settle here.

It requires applicants to revise our history and traditions, and has recently come under fire over its content.

This is because, in light of the Black Lives Matters protests, critics have questioned if the test provides a "misleading" and partial portrayal of our past.

A number of academics recently wrote an open letter, arguing that the test downplays the impact of the international slave trade and gives a "false" account of the British Empire.

And aside from the issues of representation, the exam has previously been criticised for its difficulty - often requiring applicants to remember specific dates for historical events.

With this in mind, we've decided to put together a mock version to show you the sorts of questions found on the official examination.

The genuine citizenship test, which is provided by the UK Government, features 24 questions.

We've condensed our quiz so it only has 12 questions - but it has the exact same pass mark (75%).

Question -1 of 12 Score -0 of 0
What is the meaning of the 'Magna Carta'?

This means you'll have to get at least 9 correct answers in order to be granted citizenship in our mock test.

Our version is based on resources available to applicants of the real text - but it's not the exam itself.

We've tried to provide diversity in the questions so that you will be able to sample the types of content being referrenced on the actual exam.

It's important to note however that our mock test is easier than the real citizenship test!

Good luck and don't forget to challenge your friends to try the quiz for themselves.
