Eleven North Wales businesses have been nominated at this year's Good Food Awards. From long-running chippies to stylish new coffee shops, there's a wide range of eateries being celebrated this year.

Using nominations, feedback, votes, and online reviews from real customers, the Good Food Awards reflect the views of real foodies. Known as the Blue Ribbon for Delicious Dishes, the prestigious awards are only given to those who excel in food quality, service, and value.

Here are the North Wales businesses that have been named in the Good Food Awards 2023. We've visited most of them in the past year or so and you can read our reviews of each one further down.

Les & Rita's Fish Bar, Rhyl

Les and Rita's Fish Bar can be found on Wellington Road in Rhyl

Rhyl is well known for its abundance of fish and chip shops. You won't go far in the town centre without passing one. So to be awarded the title of best chippy in town is quite an achievement.

The current holder of this title, according to Tripadvisor, is Les and Rita's Fish Bar on Wellington Road. Based on over 400 reviews, the chippy has a rating of 4.5 out of five which is pretty much as good as it gets for anywhere that's received as many write-ups.

Such things don't go unnoticed, so we paid a visit last year. You can read our review of the fish and chip shop here.

Fisherman's Fish & Chip Shop, Conwy

Fisherman's Fish and Chip Shop, Conwy

This chip shop has been an institution in Conwy for over 35 years, serving only sustainably sourced fish which is cooked to order. Here's what Tripadvisor users had to say about the long-running chippy.

Merlinsdragon said: "The fish was as fresh as they claim it is served in a crunchy crisp coating. The portions were good .The service was very good and they told everyone to be careful as it was hot just cooked food. The prices were fair. I was told to visit this shop by several very happy customers and a lot of us ate sat on the harbour wall."

Saladwilliams wrote: "Quick, friendly service. Chips were plentiful and delicious. 2 large portions fed 2 adults and 3 hungry children. We took them away and ate on the Quay but there were tables available inside. Would definitely eat there again when we are next in the area."

Tinykitchen said: "The whole of Conwy smells of fish and chips so the temptation is terrible. It was all ready on time and we took it back to the apartment to eat. The fish was fresh and the batter was crispy, also not too large."

The Golden Fry, Benllech

We visited this popular chippy earlier this year after it was nominated for another award and were left very impressed. The restaurant has been praised highly on Tripadvisor for its takeaway and online service, with many choosing to pre-order and enjoy their food at home.

We visited at around noon, hoping to enjoy the lunchtime rush, and it seemed a couple of locals had the same idea. The service was quick and friendly, and it took just a few minutes to prepare a mini cod and chips with a pot of gravy. You can read the rest of our review here.

Bistro Bermo, Barmouth

It's been years since we last reviewed Bistro Bermo, but the restaurant is continuing to go from strength to strength, remaining as popular as ever in Barmouth. Here's a snippet of what our reviewer thought when he last visited.

The Les Routiers and A Taste of Wales approved Bistro Bermo is tucked away on Church Street and you could easily drive past it unless you keep a sharp eye out for the small welcoming sign.

There are only 18 covers at this tiny eatery so booking a table is recommended especially at weekends. Despite its compact space, it is in no way claustrophobic and we found ourselves taking a seat by the window, choosing from a sensibly balanced and freshly prepared menu.

The proprietors take a real pride in their daily “specials”, which offer fresh fish caught on their very own boat, that same afternoon, with the help of the waitress who just happens to be their daughter. You can read the rest of the review here.

Y Sgwar, Porthmadog

Y Sgwar, Tremadog

Y Sgwâr is situated in the picturesque market square, with beautiful views of mountain backdrops. Tucked in the corner of the square with ample parking outside, we make our way inside to find a slate floor, original stone fireplace and a stone archway.

This gives a historic touch to the otherwise contemporary style. The restaurant seats 70 people and is much bigger than it looks from the outside. You can read the rest of our review here.

Garden Hotel & Cantonese Restaurant, Bangor

The long-running Cantonese restaurant and takeaway is especially popular with students. Just round the corner from the train station, it's also in a prime spot in the city centre.

Garden has been nominated in the restaurants category, but unfortunately we've not been over to review it for years. It's one of the longest running takeaways in the area, however, and the standards clearly are as high as ever given the nomination.

The Midlands Tapas and Wine Bar, Beaumaris

The Midland Tapas and Wine Bar in Beaumaris.

We visited the popular tapas restaurant and wine bar earlier this year. Here's what our reviewer thought.

Tapas has certainly grown in popularity over the last decade, leading to more and more eateries adopting this style of menu, but The Midland in Beaumaris, Anglesey has been offering the dish in the area for many years. I popped along last year to try out the bar area, and decided it was certainly a spot I could be tempted back to for the food.

Booking ahead due to the popularity of the spot, I visited with a few friends on Sunday afternoon. Despite running a little late we were shown to our table in the window, and for the most part had the restaurant to ourselves.

Not that I minded, it was peaceful and the window seats allowed for the ideal spot for people watching. Service was quick, and while we were being a little slow on making our choices, we did eventually settle on some drinks. You can read the rest of the review here.

To^st cafe and deli, Wrexham

We tried the award-winning café and deli earlier this year

The award-winning cafe and deli has been a big hit in Wrexham despite its small size. Our reviewer paid a visit earlier this year, here's what he thought.

The quaint little café is tiny with only four tables and a breakfast bar but the menu choice is absolutely massive. They certainly don’t just serve toast. In fact, they aim to provide seasonal produce, sourced locally from North Wales and the surrounding area in their three pages of options.

They are famous for their amazing grilled cheese sandwiches and offer a selection of vegetarian and vegan options as well as a range of dairy-free milk for customers with specific dietary requirements. The Wrexham lager Welsh rarebit on sourdough sounded particularly good for £5.50 and you could even add Bacon crispy bits for an extra 90p. Other dishes included Glamorgan cheese and leek sausages or Turkish poached eggs on sourdough in a menu packed with imagination. You can read the rest of the review here.

Haus Coffee, Colwyn Bay

Haus Coffee, Colwyn Bay

Sadly, we've not had the chance to try this stylish cafe in Colwyn Bay, but here's how they describe themselves in their own words: "We are an independent café on the established Penrhyn Road. Our aim is to blend German hospitality with Welsh creativity.

"Look no further for the best coffee shop in Colwyn Bay. We are passionate about crafting exceptional coffee experiences for our customers. Our journey began with a vision to create a space where people can connect, savour, and appreciate the art of coffee.

"At our coffee shop, we serve Neighbourhood Coffee, Speciality Coffee roasted in Liverpool. We take pride in creating a warm and inviting atmosphere, where you can enjoy your favourite coffee beverages, whether it's a classic espresso, a velvety latte, or an adventurous pour-over. Our menu also includes a selection of Brew Tea & Co. teas, HARRY’S Hot Chocolates, refreshing iced drinks, and delectable homemade cakes and snacks to complement your coffee journey."

The Big Rock Café, Porthmadog

The Big Rock Café, Porthmadog

The Porthmadog mainstay has long held an excellent reputation as one of the best cafes in the area. The café offers a wide range of cooked lunchtime treats, cakes and coffees.

It's well worth a visit if you're enjoying a day out in the Gwynedd town. You can read more about the café and things to do in the area here.
